I have www.example.com which can be viewed on a computer. How can I make the web site optimised for mobile phones?

It is usually easier to make a new .mobi mobile website than to try and adapt your existing site for mobile phones. Some sites are designed to be shown at a set size (fixed width) which won't show correctly on a phone, it may also use Adobe Flash (which mobile phones can't display) or just have too many pages which are too big for a phone to fetch and display. However, the main reason is that the content on your main website isn't necessarily what people want to read "on the move": they'll probably want to check your service offerings, prices and location - but it's unlikely they'll want to read the Directors history, download files or other activities.

The first step will be to build your own mobile website using Sites4Mobiles. Even novice users can build a standards compliant mobile website easily and in minutes using mobiSiteGalore. You don't have to worry about writing fresh content, as you can quickly copy & paste the key content (just the essence) from your existing website.

The second step will be to register your .mobi (dotMobi) domain. If your .com (dotcom) website address is example.com then you may want to register a matching .mobi domain name like example.mobi . A company such as FreeVirtualServers will be able to offer dot mobi domain name registration along with web site hosting (see step three).

The third step will be to get a web hosting service provider who can host your brand new mobile website. Most web site hosting providers can host .mobi websites - but you may wish to check with them before hand. FreeVirtualServers offers suitable hosting for .mobi websites along with registration of .mobi domain names.

What is a mobile website? How is it different from a regular website?

Mobile websites are specifically designed for viewing on Mobile Devices such as Mobile Phones/Cell Phones and PDA (Personal Digital Assistants).

Until recently websites were meant to be seen on a computer that has a large screen for viewing, along with reasonable computational power & internet speed. But mobile phones in general have smaller screens & are far less powerful than a computer. Also their internet connection speed is much slower. So websites in their current form cannot work well on mobile phones. Hence the need for websites to be specially created for mobile phones. You can create your own standards compliant mobile website using an easy to use mobile website builder like Sites4Mobiles.

Do these mobile websites use HTML?

The mobile websites use a slightly altered HTML version called xHTML, but what is key is that they need to adhere to the standards and "Mobile Web Best Practices" as laid down by the World Wide Web Consortium in association with the .mobi advisory group.

Should mobile websites be hosted only in .mobi domain or can I also host them in .com?

Today when you see a domain name ending .uk you immediately understand that this is a site aimed at the UK (United Kingdom) market. Similarly with the launch of .mobi domain name exclusively for mobile websites, it would be good idea to have your mobile website hosted in a .mobi domain name to ensure that it is universally recognised as a mobile website.

Plus, with search engines coming up with separate search engines for mobile websites (such as http://mobile.google.com from Google), it also helps ensure your mobile website will be included in their search database - meaning that your customers and visitors can find you on the move.

That all said, there is actually no technical or other restrictions meaning you "have" to put your mobile website on .mobi - you could put your mobile site on an exisiting (or new) .com, .org, .co.uk domain name. The only restriction is that if you do for for a .mobi domain name, then the content on the .mobi domain has to be accessible by mobile telephones.

Is a website created by Sites 4 Mobiles any different from the WAP site I already have?

Because of various reasons the Worldwide Web Consortium and the .mobi Group have decided it best to do away with the WAP 1.0 standards for creating mobile websites. The newly introduced WAP 2.0 standards are more flexible, and universal in nature and will overwrite the earlier standards for mobile websites. Sites4Mobiles allows you to quickly and easily create a complete mobile website fully compliant with the latest WAP 2.0 standards and the "Mobile Web Best Practices" as laid out by W3C.
